STREAMING REVIEW: Wonder Woman: 1984 surpasses lofty expectations

When the original Wonder Woman was released in 2017, weary fans everywhere applauded a female hero and a fantastic change of pace for DC.

After critical drubbings for Batman Vs. Superman and Suicide Squad, this looked like it had turned things around. Then came Justice League, an event film that entirely, absolutely did a disservice to the legacy Patty Jenkins had started with her Wonder Woman film.

Now, with Wonder Woman: 1984, this sequel shows both Patty Jenkins and actress Gal Gadot are more than ready to bring the goods. This isn’t just an incredible superhero film, but one of the best of the year.

It captures magic, nostalgia and features splendid, fun sequences and tons of action for audiences. Frankly, it’s the most wholeheartedly entertaining affair this year. Gadot gives it her all, and it shows.

Chris Pine returns to the proceedings, giving a huge amount of comic relief, and the villain — chiefly The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal – is unbelievable.

But it’s Kristen Wiig who sheds her comedian skin and kills it as villainous, fully-developed character Barbara Minerva. Start-to-finish, this epic film gives every character a chance to be fleshed out, and I became heavily invested in what was going on.

It’s a top-10 flick, and one you absolutely have to see.

4.5/5 Stars
