This cop thriller has quite the pedigree.
From the writer of Deepwater Horizon and produced by Joe & Anthony Russo, directors of the Avengers finale, this is a pulse-pounding follow-up.
21 Bridges is about a brash New York detective who starts a city-wide manhunt after two men kill a rash of cops and steal 50 kilos of cocaine.
Detective Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman, in a stellar performance) shuts down all bridges, tunnels and lakes going out of the city in an effort to catch Ray and Michael (Taylor Kitsch and If Beale Street Could Talk’s Stephan James).
Aided by D.E.A. officer Frankie Burns (Sienna Miller in a career turn) and pressured by Captain McKenna (J.K. Simmons) to get results, he pushes to catch the killers over one long, strenuous night.
While the 90-minute film neither skimps on action or high-tension, it does lose out on a script that never really differentiates itself from other films cut from the same cloth.
In the end, it’s not genre re-defining, but it certainly is at the top for entertainment value.
