REVIEW: Hobbs & Shaw bring the pain

These days, the Fast & Furious brand on anything means box-office success, but I would have never expected this spin-off to hit with such swagger, gravitas and pure entertainment value.

Furious alum Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Shaw (Jason Statham) have been on opposite sides of the fight before, so it’s no surprise they’re at odds when they have to come together for a mission.

Their unlikely alliance is formed to fight against a virus that threatens the future of humanity. With the charismatic Idris Elba on board as a part-robot villain trying to cull some of the population with the virus, this slam-bang actioner is one of the most fun of the summer.

Completely ludicrous and dependent on suspension of disbelief, Statham and Johnson shine together, and with the addition of The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, it’s one charismatic affair.

The star power is huge, and with a few key cameos that bring some huge laughs, Hobbs & Shaw is low on smarts, but high on laughs an fun.

Leave your brain at the door, and get ready for a lighter film in tone than the last few F&F films. The family themes still run deep, but there are enough hilarious sequences to keep things running smoothly.

4/5 Stars
