REVIEW: Uncle Drew hits more than a few jump shots

There’s a softness and sentimentality to Uncle Drew that you just don’t find in mainstream cinema these days.

Normally, when a bunch of stars dress in fat suits and makeup for a comedy, we get Norbit or an awful Tyler Perry movie. Here, it’s not about hitting the low-hanging fruit.

These real-life basketball legends, in disguise as older ballers, are having a hilarious time, and they’re letting us in on the joke.

As they try to take a title at Rucker Park and gain redemption, this little sports-road trip movie serves as an inspiration with some great comedic insight.

Starring are Kyrie Irving, Chris Webber, Shaquille O’Neal, Reggie Miller and Nate Robinson.

These aren’t actors pretending to be ball players. They’re professionals having a heck of a time, and it shows.

With a nice star turn by Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery and a hilarious supporting performance from Nick Kroll, it’s a low-raunch comedy that’s nothing but net.

It won’t go down as one of the perfect comedies, but it holds its own.

In a summer with too many comedic misses, it’s nice to see a film like Uncle Drew truly hit the mark.

3.5/5 Stars
