BLURAY REVIEW: Late Angus Cloud burns bright in indie crime flick

One of the saddest passings in 2023 was that of bright young star Angus Cloud. The Euphoria star endeared himself to fans, and looked to be on the verge of breakout success.

But with his overdose death in July of last year at 25-years-old, we’re left wondering about the career that might have been. If Your Lucky Day is any indication, Cloud would have made one hell of a leading man.

Writer-director Dan Brown makes a dark thriller about just how much money will corrupt, and what someone will do to keep ahold of new-found wealth.

Angus Cloud is Sterling, a down-on-his-luck drug dealer who spots opportunity when he overhears a man win the $156-millon lotto jackpot in a convenience store. Sterling holds up the store to snatch the winning ticket.

But as cop Cody tries to intervene, things turn tragic, and now the shop inhabitants are taken hostage by Sterling. They have to make a choice — Help Sterling get out scott free and take a cut of the winning ticket, or fight against him.

The acting is superb, and Cloud is absolutely stunning. There’s a fire within him that is unlike many actors on the A-list today. The ensemble also features stellar turns from Elliot Knight, Jessica Garza, Sterling Beaumon, Jason O’Mara, Spencer Garrett and Mousa Hussein Kraish.

Brown’s film has some really incredible twists that you won’t see coming, and it almost reminds me of Reservoir Dogs-age Tarantino. While it lacks the storytelling prowess, the immediacy, visual style and flair make this high-stakes flick worth checking out.

While Cloud’s performance is clouded by the bittersweet feeling we could have seen so much more from this young talent, it’s also a testament to just how soulful a turn he was capable of. His presence is magnetic, and this one is worth a look for him alone.

4/5 Stars
