Oscar-nominated director Werner Herzog has never quite achieved the mainstream fame or acclaim he deserved, but it was truly fantastic to venture through his life and works with this documentary.
An intimate portrayal of the legend, Herzog gives an in-depth look at his life, with access given to writer-director Thomas von Steinaecker that makes for a truly compelling portrait.
An auteur with a distinctive style and titan featured in shows like The Simpsons and The Mandalorian, Herzog is respect by those in the industry greatly, even if I feel like he should have way more acclaim.
Everyone from director Chloe Zhao to actors Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson, Carl Weathers and Christian Bale talk about his visual style and sets, and the reasons they loved working with the German director.
His films straddle documentary and feature, and he can interchangeably have huge prowess at both film formats. The differences between them and how he works are examined in great depth.
In the end, von Steinaecker’s film will leave Herzog aficionados enamoured, and may even manage to bring a few fans his way. For a masterful director like Herzog, this is recognition he so greatly deserves.
